The Contemporary Music Production major equips students with skills and knowledge in blended recording, performance, and composition practice. It fosters practical experience in diverse production environments, from Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) to world-class large recording studio facilities in the School of Music. Students in this major are supported in exploring the breadth of genres involved in contemporary music making, facilitating a deep understanding of the recording, compositional and performance techniques used. This major also supports students in following their passion for their chosen contemporary genres which may include popular music in its myriad of forms, jazz, classical and global music. It will also challenge students to incorporate emergent techniques and technologies into their creative practice.
Through blending solo and collaborative practice, the major emphasizes developing interpersonal and ethical practices to prepare students for professional work in music communities. Students engage with cutting-edge research to critically analyse the role of music production in addressing global challenges. They also study digital literacy skills to distribute their work. The Contemporary Music Production major culminates with a capstone large research project, where students can produce a long form recorded work or develop a live concert event.

This major requires the completion of 48 units, of which:
a maximum of 18 units may come from the completion of courses at 1000-level, and
a minimum of 18 units must come from the completion of courses at 3000-level.
