The Music Studies major gives students the opportunity to pursue high-level studies in music within the Bachelor of Arts. The key objectives of the major are to develop students' deep and sophisticated understanding of the cultural, historical, theoretical, and analytical situation of music across a variety of cultures and historical periods, while grounding these concepts in the development of their own musical practice. The School of Music provides Music Studies students with a unique 21st Century musical experience which includes a solid grounding in core skills, as well as the space and support to develop and discover new and exciting areas of music scholarship.

This major assumes prior knowledge of fundamentals of Western music notation and music theory (intervals, triads etc).

Learning Outcomes

  1. understand the languages, forms, materials, and techniques of a wide range of musics;
  2. recognise and reflect critically on social, cultural and ethical issues and apply local and international perspectives to practice in music;
  3. develop and evaluate musical, cultural, and artistic ideas, concepts and processes by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively, and through engaging with scholarship and research; and
  4. communicate sophisticated ideas, problems and arguments to do with music and the arts in modes suited to a range of audiences.

Requirements

This major requires the completion of 48 units, which must include:

A maximum of 18 units may come from the completion of 1000-level courses

A minimum of 18 units must come from the completion of 3000-level courses
