International Relations (IR) is the study of relationships, interactions, and institutions that involve power and take place across national borders. The IR minor introduces students to the field’s historical and intellectual background and to contemporary debates. Through this flexible minor, students also engage with select subfields of their choosing, and take courses on specific topics such as war, empire, human rights, foreign policy, and terrorism (among others).
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate knowledge of the international system's historical development and contemporary status: its principal events, actors, ideas, institutions, and outcomes of interest;
- demonstrate understanding of the key international relations theories and concepts, in at least one subfield/area of international relations;
- apply international relations concepts to the evaluation of international phenomena; and
- communicate and debate both orally and in writing, and work with others, using various media.

The International Relations Minor requires the completion of 24 units, which must include:
