Year in Asia is the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific's flagship program for in-country study, providing students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture of their chosen country for two consecutive semesters. Students study a combination of language and disciplinary studies at a partner institution, and complete coursework provided by the host institution or organization. Students are required to pass all in-country courses.

This 24 unit (full time, semester-long) course can be taken twice in a two-semester sequence, to make a year-long in-country study program in the region appropriate to their language/contextual major. Country, language, and institutional environments differ from region to region, and within countries. The type of language training and disciplinary study offered will vary as students are matched with institutions appropriate to their backgrounds, needs, abilities and interests.  This course provides a coherent structure for these different experiences.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Communicate verbally with a high degree of mastery of the target language (defined as level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in interactions with native speakers, with a reasonable degree of fluency and some spontaneity, and with limited strain for either party.
  2. Read and summarise the central ideas of texts in the target language on both concrete and abstract topics familiar to the student, and produce clear, detailed written text in the target language on a range of topics.
  3. Discuss abstract and concrete issues related to their disciplinary focus in an academic setting.
  4. Identify, analyse and discuss issues related to cross-cultural communication and cultural difference on a YIA community site.
  5. Apply disciplinary knowledge to coursework requirements in the target language and understand differences withing the educational culture of the host institution.

Other Information

Important: All students who would like to be considered for the Year in Asia Program must submit an application via the Global Programs website.

Students must follow the application procedure detailed on the Global Programs website and cannot submit a degree transfer application through their ISIS account until they have been formally accepted into the program by the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific.

The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific runs two application rounds each year. All applications are assessed by a committee. If successful, students will then be able to submit a degree transfer application via their ISIS account.

If you have any question regarding the Year in Asia program and your eligibility, please reach out to the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific: cap.student@anu.edu.au.

Indicative Assessment

  1. A fundamental component of the Year in Asia is the coursework provided by the host institution or organization. Students are required to attend pre-departure briefings, pass all in-country courses, and contribute to discussions on the YIA online community forum. (100) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

The standard workload for a 24 unit course is 520 hours including in class time and independent study.

Inherent Requirements
