With an emphasis on academic German, this course continues with the development of advanced listening and reading skills, oral and written communication, and critical analysis of cultural texts and contemporary issues. The course introduces students to an extended example of contemporary German literature and engages students in the study of topical issues in contemporary German-speaking societies, including a research project (Hausarbeit) on Switzerland. Students will also develop skills in giving a formal class presentation with academic content (Referat), and in intercultural communication.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- select an appropriate formulation from a broad range of language to express themselves clearly, without having to restrict what they want to say;
- read and analyse longer literary texts, e.g. novels, and relate them to German-speaking cultures;
- conduct a small research project in German: developing research questions, finding relevant literature, and structuring and writing a research essay including appropriate referencing; and
- demonstrate advanced critical thinking in understanding, synthesising and interpreting complex cultural topics and contemporary issues by using discursive and argumentative registers
