This study tour is designed to provide an opportunity for students to develop a deeper understanding of the region through immersion in an intensive learning experience. The course will alternately propose two-week long single country (such as Turkey or Saudi Arabia) and regionally focused tours (such as the Gulf countries, North Africa or Central Asia). Students will learn from local academics, writers, artists, curators and more through structured activities, lectures, demonstrations and site visits. They will also be given opportunities to explore the local culture through food, music, visual arts and other cultural artefacts while being introduced to elements of tangible and intangible heritage.
Locations of travel/themes may include, but are not limited to:
- Türkiye across centuries
- Saudi Arabia
- Central Asia
- Gulf countries
- North Africa
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- conduct independent research and to work collaboratively in groups;
- communicate expressively and critically in both oral and written forms on the complex questions about the destination country(-ies);
- critically appraise historical, political and social forces that shaped the country/region; and
- reflect on local heritage, politics and contemporary identities drawing on research and observations.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
