ASTR4005F Astronomy and Astrophysics IV (H)
The type of honours enrolment will depend on the nature of the research project, and of the choice of courses taken in the 4th year.
The research project forms a major component (50-75%) of the assessment in the honours year. Students will have a choice of a wide variety of projects offered by staff at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Research School of Physics and Engineering and the Research School of Earth Sciences every year. The remaining 25-50% will be in the form of coursework which could consist of fourth year courses offered by the Departments of Mathematics or Physics, third year astrophysics courses that they may not have already completed, astrophysics courses offered specifically to fourth year students and 4th year courses offered by the Departments of Mathematics, Physics or Computational Science..

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:1. plan and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation and evaluation of a chosen research topic in astronomy and/or astrophysics.
2. systematically identify relevant theory and concepts, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions.
3. engage in systematic discovery and critical review of appropriate and relevant information sources
4. appropriately apply statistical or other evaluation processes to original data.
5. communicate research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively both in writing and orally.
Indicative Assessment
The honours thesis is assessed and marked by two RSAA academics unrelated to the research project, using the grading criteria outlined in the CPMS honours handbook. Each assessor also provides a written report together with the mark.The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
