Program Requirements

The Bachelor of Arts Honours requires completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

48 units from completion of one of the following Honours specialisations:

For all Honours Specialisations, and for Combined Honours, HONS4100 Final Honours Grade will be used to calculate the Class of Honours and the Mark. It will be calculated using the formula: Σ (mark x units) / Σ units, giving NCN and WN a nominal mark of zero.

Specialisations

Elective Study

Once you have met the program requirements of your degree, you may have enough electives to complete an additional elective major, minor or specialisation.

Admission Requirements

A Bachelor of Arts degree from the ANU, or equivalent from another institution

A weighted average mark equivalent to an ANU 70 per cent calculated from the 36 units (i.e. 0.75 EFTSL) of courses in the major cognate to the honours specialisation, excluding 1000-level courses (i.e. introductory undergraduate courses), with the highest marks

Written approval of an identified supervisor for the thesis

And the satisfaction of any admission requirements listed in the relevant honours specialisation

Scholarships

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

1. pose a significant research question relating to their discipline;
2. investigate this question creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, including through sophisticated use of appropriate theory and methodology as appropriate to the discipline, and place these investigations in the context of the relevant intellectual tradition; and
3. communicate their research and its findings through an appropriate medium.

Further Information

If a person seeking acceptance into a Bachelor Honours program satisfies or exceeds the minimum requirement for admission to the Bachelor Honours program, the Delegated Authority is not obliged to admit the person to the program only because the person has satisfied the minimum requirement for admission.

 

The Delegated Authority for the BA Honours plans HARTS and HART2 is the CASS Associate Dean (Student Experience). All admissions to this plan must be approved by the Delegated Authority.

Combined Honours

Combined Honours is a 48-unit Honours plan. If the entry requirements for two or more Honours Specialisations have been met, and a student wishes to undertake an Honours plan that combines them, Combined Honours allows this. Combined Honours consists of (i) 24 units of 4000-level coursework from the Honours Specialisations being combined, which must be approved in writing by the CASS Honours Delegate to ensure that the selection of courses includes the required research training; and (ii) 24 units fromTHES41XX Thesis.

 

Double Honours

“Double Honours” is where two 48-unit Honours years are taken, one in each Honours Specialisation. Students enrol in the BA Honours plan HARTS for one Honours Specialisation, and HART2 for the other.
