The Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) or PhB is a unique and innovative research-focused degree for intellectually ambitious students who want to study at the highest level. Every student receives intensive individual attention and is supported by a mentor.
The program structure is extremely flexible and courses can be taken from other areas within the University. A program will be tailored to your interests by your academic mentor as well as PhB coordinators associated with individual disciplines.
This is an Advanced Studies Course within the ANU PhB(Hons) degree.
Students do multiple Advanced Studies Courses during their degree studies, each specifically designed to provide a strong research focus customised to each student. These courses are taken under the direction of the academic supervisor of a student in the PhB(Hons) degree, but may involve teaching and learning from a very wide variety of activities, including, for example:

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
The nature of these courses mean that their learning outcomes for each course are very individual and very specific. However, in general, on satisfying the requirements of this course students will have the following knowledge and skills.
1. Plan and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation and evaluation of a chosen research topic
2. Systematically identify relevant theory and concepts, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions
3. Engage in systematic discovery and critical review of appropriate and relevant information sources
4. Appropriately apply statistical or other evaluation processes to original data
5. Understand and apply ethical standards of conduct in the collection and evaluation of data and other resources
6. Communicate research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively both in writing and orally
Indicative Assessment
Assessment will be based on a negotiated student-customised mix of assessment tasks, often involving a written assignment and a presentation. Written details of the assessment are approved by the Head of Department or School on the recommendation of the academic supervisor and given in writing to the student at the start of the period of study for the course.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
