Taught entirely in Chinese in the Australian context, this course trains students in critical analysis and discussion of Chinese history and culture. Topics may include twentieth century Chinese history, cultural identity in contemporary China, and philosophical influences on Chinese culture. The goal of the course is to engage with primary materials to develop independent research and academic writing skills. This course demonstrates a commitment to research-led teaching that emphasises global citizenship, multiculturalism and the importance of multilingual academic inquiry.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Discuss and present on topics of Chinese history and culture
- Analyse themes in the materials under study and offer critical written responses
- Make critical use of concepts and analytic tools from history and cultural studies to develop, review, and synthesise knowledge about Chinese history and culture
- Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western culture and society
- Conduct independent research on original materials on Chinese history and culture.
Other Information
This is a co-taught course. The total number of students for both CHST3211 and CHST6211 is capped at 160 students for Semester 1 2020. The undergraduate version of the course CHST3211 is capped at 145 students and postgraduate version of the course CHST6211 is capped at 15 students.

Workload
The workload for this course comprises three contact hours per week. It demands an average of four hours of tutorial preparation, including assigned readings, and review of lectures.
