This course will look at the nature of ethnic identity, the ways in which ethnically-based conflicts have emerged within states, the internationalization of ethnic conflict, and the search for means of managing ethnic tensions and resolving conflicts when management strategies fail. It will draw on case studies from Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and India, and the Pacific.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Develop a good understanding of the theories about the origins of ethnicity, nationalism and ethnic conflict, and about several of the main ethnic conflicts in the Asia-Pacific region, and of attempts to manage and resolve them
- Relate abstract social science theory to real-world empirical cases
- Communicate their critical understanding of ethnicity and conflict in Asia and the Pacific in a clear and concise way through assignments and class participation
