This research-intensive Honours program provides the opportunity to conduct independent, in-depth research on a topic of your choice, with supervisory guidance. It is intended for students who have foundational knowledge in one or more of environmental science, environmental studies, geography, human ecology, forest sciences, resource and environmental management, and sustainability, as well as students who wish to apply their knowledge from another field in one of these multi-disciplinary areas. The program is usually taken full-time for two consecutive semesters and includes research training; in-depth analysis of current concepts in the broad environment field and in the selected specialized research area; and a substantial, original research project culminating in the production of a thesis. Honours extends the knowledge and skills developed during the Bachelor degree and provides a solid foundation in the practice of research suitable for entry to a broad range of careers or to a PhD.
Learning Outcomes
Plan and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation and evaluation of a chosen research topic to generate new knowledge.
Systematically identify and evaluate relevant theory and concepts, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate original conclusions.
Engage in systematic discovery and critical review of appropriate and relevant information sources.
If relevant, demonstrate sufficient mastery to understand, evaluate, and appropriately apply techniques and methods to collect original research data and/or develop new techniques and methods to collect original research data.
Analyse and interpret research data with appropriate statistical or other evaluative processes to generate new knowledge.
Understand and appropriately apply ethical standards of conduct in the collection, evaluation, analysis, and interpretation of data and other resources.
Communicate and justify complex research concepts, methods, results, contexts and implications clearly and effectively both in writing and orally to a variety of audiences.

- with a major/minor/specialisation or equivalent in a cognate discipline
- and with the written approval of an identified supervisor for the research project

Requirements
This Honours specialisation requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:
12 units from completion of ENVS4001 Honours Research Skills
36 units from completion of ENVS4000 Honours Thesis, which must be undertaken more than once, in consecutive semesters.
HONS4602 Final Honours grade will be used to calculate the Class of Honours and the Mark. It will be calculated using the formula: S (mark x units) / S units, giving NCN and WN a nominal mark of zero.
