A study of the issues which arise in the process of translating literary texts. Various genres will be studied, including poetry and drama with their particular problems of cross-language and cross-cultural transfer. Using English as our working language, we shall investigate the linguistic process of translation, and examine and where possible compare renderings into English of well-known works of literature, while trying to establish criteria by which to appraise them. Staff from across ANU, including among them experienced literary translators, contribute to this course, allowing students to work from a wide range of languages.

Indicative Assessment
Substantial literary translation (1000 words) with commentary (1500 words), 35%. [LOs 1, 3]
Critique (1500 words) of an existing literary translation (or translations), 30% [LOs 2, 3]
Five short translations in a variety of literary genres, 6% each, total 30% [LOs 1, 3]
Task-based tutorial participation, 5% [LOs 1, 2, 3]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:a) 35 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 2-hour lecture x 12 weeks; 1-hour tutorial x 11 weeks, and
