In this course, we will focus on Hispanic culture -or rather, cultures- through the lens of literature. We will read a variety of literary texts, mainly short stories, but also poems, brief excerpts of novels and plays, all appropriate to your level of Spanish. The selection will revolve around common aspects, for instance, the blurry boundaries between reality and fiction, truth and imagination, facts and dreams. We will read and discuss these Hispanic literary masterpieces in relation to the historical periods in which they were imagined, always with a critical eye, to gain better insight into Hispanic culture over time and space, as you expand your Spanish language skills.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- understand the basic characteristics of Spanish and Latin American cultures;
- summarise Hispanic historical events and literary periods;
- establish and maintain spoken or written exchanges related to cultural issues;
- engage in respectful discussions about cultural differences, involving the exchange of information, opinions and experiences; and
- express ideas through the production of original texts.
