Intangible Cultural Heritage is a rapidly growing area within the broader domain of cultural heritage. Its essential importance is being recognised both internationally and nationally. In 2003 UNESCO passed the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage and in so doing explicitly acknowledged the value of forms of cultural knowledge such as performance, song, storytelling and dance, and the practices that underpin tangible artistic outcomes. Increasingly intangible heritage is seen as a fundamental and integral part of cultural heritage with its own particular challenges around the question of safeguarding. This specialisation is designed to meet the growing need for heritage practitioners and scholars to acquire an understanding of the key issues of intangible heritage in its various forms and to apply this knowledge within the areas of heritage management and museum practices.
