This course introduces students to the techniques of econometrics. The emphasis is on the essential ideas and the applications of econometric methods, with the material derived using a mixture of rigour and intuition. The course covers appropriate tools for cross-sectional (observations on several economic units - usually countries, firms or households - at a single point in time), time series (observations for one economic unit over time), and panel (observations on several economic units followed through time) datasets. It starts with the linear regression model and then move to introductions to micro-econometric and macro-econometric techniques.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Understand the essential ideas and applications of econometric methods.
- Understand different types of data (times series and cross-sectional) and their associated problems and solutions.
- Analyse simple datasets using econometric software (R).
- Present econometric results in a readily usable form and be able to interpret and explain econometric results.
- Understand how econometric methods can be used to provide evidence for making policy decisions.

Weekly group in-class presentation
This group-based assessment covers the learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Students have the option to undertake this assessment or have its weight applied to the final exam.
Design: Students are randomly paired to present solutions to weekly tutorial questions throughout the semester, excluding weeks 1, 7, and 12. Evaluation is conducted by peers through anonymous voting and by the instructor. While only one student presents at a time, the marks are applied to all students in the group, providing an incentive for collaborative preparation and effort.
Aim: the aim of this assessment is threefold: (i) Encouraging student engagement with course materials through the flipped classroom teaching model; (ii) Bridging social barriers among students and fostering a shared cohort experience through random pairing; and (iii) Offering immediate feedback to enhance the learning process.

Final exam
The final exam encompasses the evaluation of all Learning Outcomes (LOs), drawing upon materials covered throughout the semester. An exam is a highly suitable way of assessing achievements in a technical course such as this. Final Examination covering the whole course will be held during the examination period with the specific date to be confirmed by the ANU examination office.

Hardcopy Submission
For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.
Late Submission
Late submission not permitted. If submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date is not permitted, a mark of 0 will be awarded. Extensions and Penalties

If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.Resubmission of Assignments
