This is a self-directed, research-intensive course in which a student undertakes an independent research project with guidance primarily from an academic mentor as well as other advisors and the course convener. During the course, the student produces a research proposal, develops skills and knowledge relevant to the project, conducts relevant 'desk-based' research, and advances their knowledge of Australian Indigenous Studies theories and methodologies. Students enhance their knowledge of ethical guidelines and protocols that Indigenous peoples have developed and apply it in their research practice and expression of that research. This course is a capstone course in Australian Indigenous Studies, and students who undertake this course are at an advanced stage of their studies in Indigenous Studies.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- design and complete a well-structured, persuasive research project;
- develop ongoing, independent research practices; and
- demonstrate insight into decolonising methodologies, other research methodologies and theoretical perspectives developed by First Peoples, and engage in ethical research on a topic that matters to First Peoples;
Other Information
In order to undertake this course, the student must have the support of an approved mentor. The student's academic mentor will have expertise in the topic or disciplinary field the subject of the project. The research project must fall within the field of Australian Indigenous Studies (AUIS), and be on a topic the student has not been studied in another of the student's project. The student's proposed research project is developed in consultation with their mentor and approved by the course convener. If the proposed project is approved by the convener, the convener will give permission for the student to enrol in the course. The independent research project may be trans- or inter-disciplinary with AuIS, provided the student's mentor has relevant expertise in that field.

Workload
130 hours of student learning time made up of:
a) 24 hours of contact: consultations and communication between the student and their mentor, other advisors and course convener
b) 106 hours of independent reading, research and writing.
Inherent Requirements
Foundational knowledge and understanding of Australian Indigenous Studies research theories and practices.
Requisite and Incompatibility
You will need to contact the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences to request a permission code to enrol in this course.

The student will research independently relevant readings and other materials to support their research project. The convener and/or mentor may suggest other texts.
Assumed Knowledge
It will be assumed that students have knowledge of Australian Indigenous Studies research and debates, for example, through having completed more than one INDG course. Students will normally be at an advanced stage of their degree.
