This readings-based course will build students’ research skills and knowledge in the academic writing conventions of their target language, and provide students with analytical tools to critically evaluate a range of primary and secondary material. Critical discussion and analysis of scholarly writing from a range of intellectual traditions and perspectives will enable students to situate their research and methodological approach within a broader academic framework.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- understand the academic writing conventions of the target language;
- evaluate knowledge of appropriate theories, methodologies, or intellectual traditions in different languages; and
- analyse and critically evaluate primary and secondary materials in both English and the target language, and apply these in mapping the argumentation and methodological framework of their own thesis.
Indicative Assessment
- Literature review of articles in English and the target language related to the student’s thesis, including analysis of written academic conventions of the target language, 2500-3000 words (40) [LO 1,2,3]
- Oral presentation (15 minutes) and written overview of thesis methodology and theoretical framework (2500 - 3000 words) (50) [LO 1,2,3]
- Thesis abstract (500 words) (10) [LO 1,3]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
260 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 24 hours of contact with supervisor/instructor over 12 weeks, which may include one-on-one or small workshop-style meetings
b) 236 hours of independent student research, reading and writing (approximately 15-20 hours per week).
