This course will provide key training for thesis writing and research communication in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. Students will gain hands-on experience in essential components of the research writing process: planning a study and developing research questions; critically assessing and synthesising relevant literature; effectively structuring a thesis and organising content within sections; and using appropriate academic style and conventions. Students will also gain knowledge of research dissemination through presentations and publications for different audiences, and acquire practical skills in tools and techniques for research writing, such as advanced Word skills and the use of reference management software. By focusing on one topic area for the different pieces of assessment throughout the course, students will complete the course with a strong basis for their Honours thesis, and will have had experience presenting their ideas to scholars outside their research area. Material submitted in this course may be incorporated into a student’s thesis.
