In this course, students will further develop their oral component of a one-year intensive beginners program (CHIN1012 in Semester 1 and CHIN2022 in Semester 2) in Modern Standard Chinese (Putonghua or Mandarin). The objective of this course is to lay a solid oral foundation for further studies of the Chinese language and to provide students with deeper knowledge of the Chinese culture. Students will engage in student-led discussions and other activities such as role-play, speeches and listening exercises to practice grammar points and vocabulary and develop their linguistic knowledge. Students are further introduced to authentic materials which will strengthen their awareness of Chinese culture, society, history, and environment. By the end of this course, students will be also be able to conduct conversations with increased fluency on topics concerning everyday life using simple sentences, and effectively navigate cultural differences.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Demonstrate increased oral competence, with an active vocabulary of approximately 500 words and expressions;
- Accurately recognise, recall and reproduce oral and written texts in pinyin;
- Demonstrate the ability to identify accurate pronunciation and tones, and an increased ability to achieve that accuracy when pronouncing words and speaking sentences;
- Demonstrate the ability to conduct simple conversations with increased fluency on topics concerning everyday life;
- Display an increased linguistic knowledge and awareness of Chinese culture through language production.

On successful completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to engage at a Advanced Beginner level of Standard Modern Chinese.
Students with native speaker proficiency (may include cognate languages and dialects) must review the language proficiency assessment site and contact the CAP Student Centre for appropriate enrolment advice. Students with previous “language experience or exposure” are required to undertake a language proficiency assessment to ensure enrolment at the most appropriate level.
Relevant past experience includes:
- Previous study of the language (both formal and informal, for example but not limited to, at school, or, home, or through online activities, etc.)
- Being exposed to the language in childhood via a family member or friend
- Travel or living in a country where the language is spoken
- The language being spoken in your home (even if you do not speak it yourself)
Students who are not sure if they need to undertake a language proficiency assessment should seek advice from the course or language convenor. Students who intentionally misrepresent their language proficiency level may be investigated under the Academic Integrity Rule 2021 as having failed to comply with assessment directions and having sought unfair advantage. This may results in a penalty such as reduced grades or failure of the course.
Students are not permitted to enrol in a language course below one that they have already successfully completed, except with permission of the language and/or course convenor.

Workload
The total workload for the subject is 130 hours over 12 weeks of class and the examination period.
Students are expected to attend 2 x 1 hour lectures and 3 x 1 hour tutorials per week.
