This is a research-intensive course in which students undertake a self-directed research project under the guidance of a supervisor. It comprises a series of seminars on planning and conducting research, and on academic skills development. The majority of time is spent developing and implementing a research plan under the supervision of an academic member of staff.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Explain basic research theory and practice as it applies to topics related to environment and society;
- Conduct independent research on a supervised topic, and present research contexts, methodologies and findings clearly and effectively both orally and in writing;
- Engage in ethically-sound and professional research on topics related to environment and society.

Admission to this course is subject to the availability of a suitable supervisor and approval from Associate Director (Science) Education, Fenner School. Students must complete the Research Project Summary form . Once the forms have been completed and signed they must be emailed to fses.coursework.enquiries@anu.edu.au at the start of the relevant session
Admission may be restricted to prospective Honours students. Admission of non-Science students requires the additional approval of an appropriate Authority from the relevant College. Other than in exceptional cases, admission to this course requires the completion of at least 30 units at 2000/3000 level, with Credit average performance in 2000 and 3000 level courses in the School, and Distinction level performance in courses related to the proposed research project.
For this course to count towards a specific major, minor or specialisation, the research project must be within the field of said major, minor or specialisation.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
Approximately 130 hours of total student learning time over the relevant semester or session made up of approximately:
- 120 hours of independent student research, planning, meeting, reading and writing.
- 10 hours of research-related career development activities, including seminars
Students are expected to maintain regular contact with their Supervisor and attend all supervisory meetings. A fortnightly research cohort meeting will be held to monitor progress and develop research skills.
