This class consists of two components: online self-study and face-to-face in-class study.Online, students study a textbook, along with prescribed vocabulary lists, grammar points and reading passages, at their own pace. Extensive lecture videos and self-study resources are provided. Students take online quizzes during invigilated computer lab hours to test their understanding of the material. During face-to-face workshops and tutorials students work in small groups reading, discussing and writing about a broad range of real-world materials. The focus of this section of the course is to help students to transition from the certainty of a textbook to the ambiguity and confusion of real-world Japanese. The language of instruction for this class is Japanese and it is expected that all students will make every effort to use only Japanese in class time and class-related correspondence.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Use an active vocabulary of kanji (approximately 1500 vocabulary and kanji characters) and expressions, common to newspapers and similar media.
- Use grammatical constructions and vocabulary necessary to read non-specialised, assigned texts without the use of a dictionary.
- Demonstrate independent reading strategies to engage with unfamiliar texts, and read real-world materials with the aid of a dictionary.
- Clearly distinguish between different levels of formality in reading and writing and demonstrate a clear understanding of newspaper conventions and writing styles.
- Recall, summarise, critically and creatively engage with key points of texts read.
- Conduct research on contemporary Japanese social issues drawing on a range of Japanese language primary and secondary; write a formal academic essay in Japanese.
Research-Led Teaching
The development of the curricula was inspired by Mikhail Bakhtin’s language philosophy; language is acquired through the assimilation of speech genres that are used by others for similar purposes in typical situations of social communication. The concept of speech genres is incorporated into the curricula with the purpose of enhancing student motivation.

From week 2 to week 10, students take an online quiz each week. The quizzes are due on Sundays at 23:55pm. The online quizzes are designed for students to prepare for Monday lectures. The quizzes are self-paced, and students may take the quizzes whenever they feel they are ready. If students are not satisfied with the mark they receive, they can repeat it any number of times without penalty. The last (not necessarily highest) score will count. Once the deadline has passed, no further attempts will be possible.
Each quiz has 20 questions. Time limit for each quiz attempt is 10mins.

There will be two online exams in weeks 6 and 12 (Seminar class time) that will test reading comprehension. Students will be expected to have learned all of the relevant grammar and vocabulary highlighted in the lectures and seminars and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the texts. Time limit for each exam is 50mins.

Students will submit an academic essay (2500 Japanese characters) on topics related to Japanese culture/language. Students will have the opportunity to submit a rough draft and to receive written feedback on the rough draft prior to submitting the final copy. Marking criteria/rubric are available on Wattle.

Mini writing test (200 Japanese characters) x 3
In tutorial, we will study how to integrate the expressions, registers, and techniques employed in the text into our own work. The assessments for this component of the course are three mini-writing tests. Students are expected to write about 100-200 characters in each test. Instructors will endeavor to return marked tests within two weeks after the test. Time limit for each test is 10mins.
