Australian Cinema looks at the influence of film and cinematic genre on Australian culture. From the road movie to the Western, horror to comedy, silent film to sample film, this course surveys the history of cinema in Australia and considers how such genres and modes reflect and influence Australian cultural history. It also investigates Australian filmmakers’ engagement with transnational systems of commercial film and art cinema.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the historical development of the film industry in Australia;
- read film as a historic and cultural document;
- think critically about the construction of national myths and icons; and
- demonstrate insight into the place of film in Australian culture.

Workload
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 12 hours of lectures, 12 hours of tutorials and 24 hours of film screening; and
b) 82 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
