This course covers the fundamentals of the use of computing in theoretical and observational astrophysics research. Students will acquire the skills necessary to write computer programs to handle and process astronomical data. They will learn techniques to model astronomical processes and solve numerical problems related to them, including fundamental tools of numerical analysis such as numerical solution of differential equations and Fourier analysis. They will learn to use a range of statistical and machine learning tools to analyse astronomical data and draw inferences from it.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Create effective and robust algorithms for common numerical tasks such as numerical integration, interpolation, Fourier analysis and statistics, implemented in C and/or Python.
- Create an efficient development environment involving code, makefiles and the use of subroutine libraries.
- Critically evaluate which numerical techniques and software tools are appropriate to use for applications in machine learning, large data sets and related statistical analysis.
- Effectively apply modern parallel computers to solve large computational problems.
- Clearly communicate code functionality and intent using comments and documentation, so that code can be read, used, and shared by others.
Research-Led Teaching
This course includes the use of research-based data from simulations and observations.
Required Resources
For this course you will need access to a computer with Linux-based shell (e.g., Bash) and program capabilities. The first few sessions and assignment will be about Bash. You will also need access to python 3. Please read the 'Prerequisites' below, for more information and/or contact your IT department for help with software and access. Moreover, you will need a computer account at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics; see computer account form below. This is necessary for access to computer servers at RSAA, as some of the course involves remote and parallel computing. Please contact RSAA IT for account creation.

Hardcopy Submission
For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.
Late Submission
Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.

Extensions and Penalties
Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.Resubmission of Assignments
Resubmission of assignments is not permitted.
Privacy Notice
The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use.
