With an emphasis on developing competency in academic German, including critical analysis, this course continues with the development of listening and reading comprehension skills and of oral and written communication. Students will learn and practise how to write a formal essay in German (Hausarbeit). The course introduces students to a range of 20th and 21st-century German literature and engages students in the study of issues affecting contemporary German-speaking societies. Furthermore, it provides students with learning opportunities in the area of intercultural communication.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- demonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of, and critical engagement with, various aspects of modern German-speaking societies;
- express themselves clearly and without much sign of having to restrict what they want to say in German;
- use the language for academic purposes, e.g. essay writing with appropriate research and referencing;
- read and analyse literary and other texts and understand them in their social and historical context; and
- demonstrate advanced critical thinking in understanding, synthesising and interpreting complex cultural topics and communicating their own views and arguments in appropriate discursive and argumentative registers.
