The Advanced Spanish Studies minor is for students who already have a high level of competence in Spanish. It aims to deepen students’ knowledge and critical understanding of Spanish language and culture, while continuing to improve their fluency in the language, in reading and listening comprehension as well as oral and written expression. The courses included in this Advanced Minor allow students to examine in detail linguistic, cultural, social, literary and historical aspects of the Spanish-speaking world.

Learning Outcomes

  1. communicate proficiently and confidently in Spanish;
  2. identify the structure and uses of Spanish;
  3. demonstrate critical understanding of the cultural and linguistics aspects of Spanish language and societies and their socio-historical context;
  4. construct a schema of the connections between the Spanish language and its geographical, social and cultural origins; and
  5. recognise the importance of intercultural communication.

Requirements

The Advanced Spanish Studies Minor requires the completion of 24 units, which must include:

SPAN3030 - Advanced Spanish Topics in Language and Culture


A maximum of 18 units from the completion of the following list:

SPAN2102 - Más que palabras: A Journey around the Hispanic World

SPAN2107 - Picturing Latin America and Spain

SPAN3001 - Intermediate Spanish Studies I

SPAN3100 - Violence and Power in Hispanic Literature: Crímenes Perfectos

SPAN3603 - History of the Spanish Language. A Linguistic Time Travel


A maximum of 12 units from the completion of the following list:

LANG3007 - Romance Linguistics*

LING2013 - Teaching Languages

LING2029 - Assessing Language

LING3101 - Second Language Acquisition


*All Language Studies (LANG) courses must have a Course Topic of Spanish to be included in this minor.
