This course introduces students to a varied and exciting range of artistic practices from contemporary India, Indonesia, China and Japan over half a century from c. 1965-2015. Students will be offered an understanding of political, cultural and artistic contexts against which this work is located. The theoretical framework will address issues of postcoloniality, globalisation, and marginality. The course offers students an understanding of the history of contemporary art beyond mainstream narratives based in Euro-American frameworks. It will situate artistic innovation and transformation in art practice alongside geopolitical processes from the Cold War to the climate emergency.
This course may be offered in semester-long format or as an intensive.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- demonstrate familiarity with major developments in contemporary visual art in Asia;
- critically analyse significant works, the careers of individual artists and relevant cultural and political histories;
- comprehend specific historical issues that underpin the development of contemporary art cultures in Asia;
- critically evaluate significant theoretical frameworks and apply insights from these to chosen case studies;
- present written and oral arguments that address material discussed in the course.

Workload
For semester-mode delivery:
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact: three hours of classroom activity per week for 12 weeks (a total of 3 hours contact per teaching week); and
b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
For intensive-mode delivery:
a) 36 hours of contact delivered during successively timetabled intensive days across two weeks; and
b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
