The third of the sequential music performance courses supports students in deepening their knowledge and skills in both solo and ensemble settings while also building practical experience in live and studio recording settings. This course focuses on the relationship between musical performance and recording, ensuring students know how to actively participate in the recording of their voice/instrument. Students will participate in one-to-one sessions with vocal/instrumental teachers, ensemble rehearsals, seminars, recording and mixing sessions, and other practical and academic contexts.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- demonstrate an informed and progressively developing understanding of terminology, characteristics of style, and historical concepts as they relate to musical works;
- demonstrate an informed and progressively developing level of technical proficiency, and an evidential understanding of the emotional content in musical works;
- work independently and collaboratively to develop confidence in understanding the craft of musical performance and its presentation to an audience; and
- critically analyse material and aesthetical elements of music, demonstrating an ability to provide feedback and pose research questions in both written and verbal formats.
Work Integrated Learning
Simulation/Virtual
This course gives students real world experience working with an ensemble and ensemble director towards a public performance. Students will receive and prepare repertoire, rehearse with other musicians, and then present their work in a concert which is open to the public.
Students will also participate in recording sessions, preparing them for work as professional musicians.

Workload
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 60 hours of contact over 12 weeks: instrumental/vocal instruction, ensemble rehearsals, seminars; and
b) 70 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
