The primary objective of this minor is to provide students with an understanding of the causes, prevention and containment of conflict, and of theoretical and practical approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Particular emphasis is given to the relevance of these issues to Australia, Asia and the Pacific, and the major emphasises both the historical and contemporary contexts in which conflicts occur. Students will learn about the conflicts that have shaped our world, region and country, and efforts to prevent and resolve such conflicts. Students that have completed the minor will be equipped to pursue advanced research in the fields of international relations, peace and conflict studies, and security studies or to develop a career in a wide range of relevant professions, including in non-governmental organisations, international organisations, government and policy bodies.

 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the keyconcepts and theoretical frameworks in the study of peace and conflict, andcritically apply these to important issues in the field;
  2. Understandappropriate research methods and quality data, to investigate problems relatedto the prevention, management and resolution of armed conflict;
  3. Develop and apply critical thinking skills to key peace and conflict issues through high quality written and oral analysis
  4. Demonstrate anunderstanding of the ethical implications of research and practice in the fieldof peace and conflict studies.

Requirements

This minor requires the completion of 24 units, which must consist of:


A minimum of 6 units from the completion of the following introductory courses:

A minimum 6 units from the following list of advanced courses:
