ARCH8002 is run as an intensive field course which aims to provide students with experience in excavation, stratigraphic recording, site planning, artefact recording and an understanding of the complex relationships between sites and the landscapes in which they occur. Emphasis is on learning and refining high level technical skills and understanding how these can be applied to better understand archaeological site formation processes and environmental management issues at the site scale, working in Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
Due to logistical limitations, this course has a maximum enrolment of 10 students. These students will be selected based on short written statements submitted as part of the application process.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Develop and apply appropriate archeological site skills, including excavation, stratigraphic recording, site planning and artefact recording.
- Understand the relationship between archeological sites and the broader landscape in which they occur.
- Develop and apply technical skills to appreciating archeological sites, their formation and management.

Workload
The standard workload for a 6 unit course is 130 hours in total, including both in class time and independent study. The schedule for this course varies depending on the specific topic offered and will be described in the Other Information section for each new class when it is added.
Inherent Requirements
To complete this course, students must participate in the field trip/study tour to a domestic or international field location. To participate in the trip, students must be able to:
- Travel to the field location and stay in field accommodation such as shared basic cabins or dorm rooms;
- Monitor and manage their own health while studying and living with a small group of people at the location, which may be isolated;
- Understand and respect the needs of other participants and act professionally throughout the trip.
Students who cannot meet these requirements will not be able to participate in the trip and therefore cannot complete the course.
In addition, some of the trip options may require students to:
- Safely traverse 2-3km over uneven ground at a moderate pace.
Students who can provide evidence they are unable to meet this requirement may be able to choose other options or negotiate alternative participation and assessment requirements with the course convenor.
