Students undertaking this course will pursue intensive language study at an ANU partner institution. This is a short-term (three weeks) in-country course where students will learn locally. The course is offered for a range of language proficiency levels and aims to provide:
1. introductory course to new language learners;
2. an opportunity for improvement for continuing language learners;
3. extended instruction for advanced language learners.
Students enrolled in this course will not only have the opportunity to learn the language, but also to develop their awareness of the target culture and society. Entry into this course is available through a competitive application process.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Improve students' command of the target language in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Enhance students' socio-cultural awareness of the relevant country whose language is being learnt.
- Improve students' ability to engage with the local community in a variety of circumstances.
- Develop confidence and autonomy when acting in a range of day-to-day contexts.
- Reflect on the similarities and differences between the culture/society they will be exposed to and Australia's.

Indicative Assessment
- Students taking this course are required to attend all the classes and participate in all the outside-class cultural activities as well as successfully complete all the intensive course requirements at the host university. (100) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
This course requires 130 hours, including class time and self-study.
This course is offered through intensive delivery in non-standard academic sessions. Students will receive an 'EE' result for this course and have credit allocated to their degree on successful completion of the study at the host institution.
Inherent Requirements
To complete this course, students must participate in the field trip/study tour to a domestic or international field location. To participate in the trip, students must be able to:
- Travel to the field location and stay in field accommodation such as shared basic cabins or dorm rooms;
- Monitor and manage their own health while studying and living with a small group of people at the location, which may be isolated;
- Understand and respect the needs of other participants and act professionally throughout the trip.
Students who cannot meet these requirements will not be able to participate in the trip and therefore cannot complete the course.
In addition, some of the trip options may require students to:
- Safely traverse 2-3km over uneven ground at a moderate pace.
Students who can provide evidence they are unable to meet this requirement may be able to choose other options or negotiate alternative participation and assessment requirements with the course convenor.
