This is an advanced course on the methods and theoretical concepts of politics, philosophy and/or economics. It will prepare research students for the design and implementation of a research project, namely a 20,000-word thesis, that leads to the development of new understandings or that provides solutions to complex problems at the intersection of politics, philosophy and economics.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- demonstrate a deeper understanding of methodological issues and areas of interdisciplinary knowledge relevant to the thesis; and
- demonstrate appreciation of quantitative and qualitative research techniques, as applicable to field of research.

- 1 x Paper Outline, 500-words each [6 unit]; 1 x Paper Outline, 500-words each [ 12 unit] (70) [LO 1]
- 1 x Essay, 3,500-words [6 unit] x 1 Essay, 7,000-words each [12 unit] (20) [LO 1,2]
- Participation in seminar (10) [LO 1]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
260 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 24 hours of contact over 12 weeks (6 unit); 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks [12 unit], including recorded lectures; taught seminars and attendance at relevant research seminars;
b) 106 hours [6 unit] 212 hours [12 unit] of independent student research, reading and writing.
