Language Studies or Linguistics Honours will give you high-level preparation for professional life or a higher degree by research, such as a Masters or PhD.
It will deepen your disciplinary expertise as well as advance your knowledge of the research principles, methods, and theoretical concepts of language studies or linguistics.
You will gain skills in research design, project management and implementation through a research project, typically a thesis in English of up to 20,000 words or a 12,000-15,000-word thesis written in the language you study (French, Italian, German or Spanish).
This specialisation is for students undertaking honours in modern European languages or linguistics. Students undertaking honours in the following languages will take the Asia Pacific Studies Honours Specialisation: Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Sanskrit, Thai or Vietnamese.
Learning Outcomes
- pose a significant research question relating to language studies or linguistics;
- investigate this question creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, including through sophisticated use of appropriate theory and methodology as appropriate to language studies or linguistics, and place these investigations in the context of the relevant intellectual tradition; and
- communicate their research and its findings through an appropriate medium.
