An individual course of readings on a topic identified by the student in consultation with the coordinator. The focus will be on English language material but students with particular Asian language skills will be encouraged to use them where possible. Fortnightly meetings to discuss material covered will be on a one-to-one basis.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

i) write effective critical reports on academic articles in their topic area
ii) write a well-researched and well-argued essay based on secondary sources in their topic area.
(iii) orally discuss, with a good level of analysis, a range of academic articles in their topic area
Other Information
This course is for high performing students. Prerequisites are:
i) completion of 72 units at ANU or equivalent, and
ii) a credit average in non-language courses completed, and
(iii) submission and approval by course convenor of a short (250-300 word) written proposal for a research essay that would form the basis of the course.
Indicative Assessment
Five written reports of 400 words each (35% total); one research essay of 3,000 words (55%); performance in discussions during fortnightly meetings (10%).
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
