High-performing students who have completed their core program requirements can pursue an individual, in-depth exploration of a topic in Asian studies not otherwise offered. Students obtain confirmation of their eligibility from the code convener and develop a specialised focus of study in consultation with an academic supervisor. While the focus is on English-language material, students studying an Asian language are encouraged to make use of those skills. It is expected that students are familiar with background material relevant to their topics, as well as with the basics of research, critical analysis, and essay writing. This readings course is suitable for students who wish to pursue an advanced topic in preparation for Honours or to gain specialized expertise that builds upon previous coursework.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

- Evaluate scholarly debates and sources in your field;
- Exercise critical thinking through the process of active independent learning;

Other Information
This course is for high-performing students. Prerequisites are:
(i) completion of 72 units at ANU or equivalent, and
(ii) at least a 5.0 GPA, and
(iii) submission to and approval by course convenor of a short (300 word) written proposal for a research essay that would form the basis of the course; this proposal should indicate the student’s relevant experience from previous coursework; and
(iv) written confirmation of supervision from a member of academic staff. Students are responsible for securing their own supervision.

Workload
The total workload for the course is 130 hours including independent study.
There will be fortnightly meetings (or equivalent) to discuss material covered, on a one-to-one basis.
