This is an advanced course in Australian Indigenous Studies that allows students to reflect on and develop their knowledge of and insight into Indigenous peoples' experiences, perspectives and knowledges. Students develop their research skills, pursuing a research project that allows them to develop their knowledge and skills in ethical research methodology and writing that is compliant with critical Indigenous studies protocols. This is an advanced course in Australian Indigenous Studies, allowing students to explore more deeply key concepts and methodologies they have learnt in Australian Indigenous Studies. Students will have an opportunity to work with other students to develop their research project planning, and analyse more deeply a complex issue in this disciplinary field.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. design and complete a well-structured, persuasive research project in Australian Indigenous Studies;
  2. develop ongoing, independent research practices that comply with ethics and protocols developed in Indigenous Studies;
  3. analyse and apply research methodologies and theoretical perspectives developed by Indigenous scholars in critical Indigenous studies and other First Peoples, and engage in ethical research on a topic that matters to First Peoples in Australia.

Students can take this course as a 6 unit course or enrol instead in 12 units, which is an extended research project.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

For the 6-unit version of the course:

130 hours of student learning time made up of:

a) 10 hours of contact: in lectures/tutorials and workshops, including opportunities for peer learning; and

b) 120 hours of independent reading, research and writing.

For the 12 unit version of the course, an additional 130 hours of independent, research and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course, students must have completed: 24 units from the AUIS- Major including INDG1001, INDG1002 and INDG3006, SOCY2043 (2023 or later) or SOCY2038 (2024 or later); OR 24 units from the ISCK- Major including INDG1001, INDG1002 and INDG3006 Or have gained consent from the convenor.

Prescribed Texts

The student will research independently relevant readings and other materials to support their research project. The convener may suggest other texts.

Assumed Knowledge

Foundational knowledge and understanding of Australian Indigenous Studies research theories and practices. Intermediary knowledge and skills in Indigenous Studies research ethics, protocols and methods and diverse knowledges of First Peoples in Australia. Teachers and fellow students can assume that students have knowledge of Australian Indigenous Studies scholarship, research theories and practices, and debates, and that this course experience will be culturally safe.
